The Unique Charm of the Flora-Bama: More Than Just a Bar
On the edge of the Florida-Alabama border sits our beloved dive-bar, the Flora-Bama. Yet, the Flora-Bama is not just a bar—it’s a landmark deeply woven into the fabric of our coastal community. Since 1964, it has evolved from a simple package store into a cultural hub that reflects the spirit of the Perdido Life. As a local girl, I’ve seen firsthand how the Flora-Bama represents so much more than nightlife; it's where our community comes together.
The Essence
When you walk into the Flora-Bama, you’re immediately struck by its charm—like a living scrapbook, you’ll see white sand between the floorboards and love notes in permanent marker on the walls. Every little detail, big or small, tells a story of good times. It’s the kind of place where kids can enjoy the beachfront view until 6 p.m., while the rest of us might linger a little closer to closing time. And come Sunday morning, many of us return for church held right here in the bar.
Commitment to Community
The real heart of the Flora-Bama lies in its commitment to community. When Hurricane Ivan devastated our coast in 2004, it destroyed the original building. The Flora-Bama could have been just another lost relic, but instead, it sprang back in makeshift tents and trailers, supported by a diverse mix of fishermen, locals, spring-breakers, and snowbirds alike, who weren’t about to let their favorite spot disappear. Rebuilt on stilts 22 feet above flood level, it remains a beacon in our community today.
Culture and Charity
The Flora-Bama isn’t just about throwing back a drink; it’s about throwing fish for charity at the Interstate Mullet Toss and celebrating songwriters at the Frank Brown Festival—the oldest and largest of its kind in the country. These events, along with many others throughout the year, not only entertain but also support vital causes, from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to local youth groups. We gather here, and through these gatherings, the Flora-Bama gives back (they give to more than 30 groups annually).
Belonging
For us locals, it’s hard to explain the feeling of belonging that permeates this place, but for those of us who have grown up with the Flora-Bama as a backdrop in our lives, it feels like home. The Flora-Bama is more than just a bar. It's where we celebrate our Gulf Coast lifestyle, welcoming all who visit to share in our little community and make memories that last a lifetime. Whether you’re a local, are thinking about moving to Perdido Key, or are just simply visiting, you’re not just a number here—you’re a part of the family.
