Tips for Staying Active in Perdido Key

One of the many perks of Florida living has always been the fact that no matter the time of year, you are able to get outside and soak up the sun. Whether its early morning in the middle of August or late afternoon in February, you can find activities outdoors to keep yourself active.

In our small town of Perdido, you might think the choices are limited for daily exercise or adventure. Although we may not have the massive gyms found in bigger cities, you won’t hear us complain. Between the walking/running trails, kayak/bike rentals and breathtaking sunset sailing trips available in the area, you simply have no excuse to stay inside on the couch.

If you’ve ever walked on sand for a few minutes, you realize how much of a workout it can be…so imagine running on it! Part of the fun of jogging on Johnson’s Beach is the fact the birds hardly even acknowledge you early in the morning. It’s true. Blue herons tend to avoid crowds, so you’ll find them on the beaches in the morning hours and they don’t seem to mind locals jogging past them while they search for breakfast.

Even afternoons in the middle of February are filled with sun. Whether the temp is 65 or 90 degrees, life is better on the water! Did you know you can rent kayaks, jet skis, paddleboards, and pontoon boats at the Flora-Bama? Flora-Bama Marina has plenty of fun for the family. A local favorite is kayaking because it is low maintenance and can be hauled easily. You can launch your kayak directly in front of the marina or take it to Big Lagoon State Park. The water is calmer there and you won’t be competing with boats while you paddle.

If you prefer to beach bar hop, try a jet ski! You can rent a jet-ski mid-day for a couple of hours and ride on over to Sunset Grille for a drink with a view! A lot of people actually paddleboard this trail, but it’s about 5 miles (10 miles total), so you’ll want to make sure you are ready for a workout if you decide to do that.

Many like to stay on dry land but want to escape the car and you can always rent a bike (or bring your own). You can pedal on down to The Jellyfish for sushi, Islander Food Shack for a burger or Island Sweets Ice Cream and Coffee Shop. All of which are loved by the locals. You’ll find people on bikes and scooters any time of the year.

The beach life here in Perdido Key is un-rivaled and the real estate market is booming. If you have an interest in buying or selling in this area, give our team a call. We’ll even meet you on the sand!
